Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women's rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger's racism. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Ichigo takano6/29/2023 ➽ Kakeru Naruse – The boy who will not be in their lives anymore if his friends do not change the past. Very shy, very timid, a very sweet little cinnamon roll. ➽ Naho Takamiya – Main protagonist, who receives the letter about what her life is going to be like in ten years, unless she changes some things. Their willingness to do every and anything to save their friend is something so beautiful that I can’t even find words to describe it. It’s truly the best aspect of this manga. This obviously makes Naho hyper aware of everything she and her friends are doing, because she is so scared she is going to repeat past mistakes and end up losing this boy anyway.Īnd this group of friends truly selflessly and unconditionally love each other. The man the illustrated man6/29/2023 The first story, “The Veldt”, is perhaps one of the most disturbing in the whole collection. When night falls, the beautiful images on his body begin to move, and stories unfold… The book begins with the narrator encountering the Illustrated Man, a man completely covered in tattoos, who tells the story of how he got them (and how he curses them now). And anyway, the vast majority of these stories wowed me. As the book progressed, they did start to blur together, but perhaps that’s fitting given their medium. I’ve had a copy of The Illustrated Man for practically forever, and as soon as I opened the book I was sorry that I had let it languish for so long on my shelves. “In these eighteen startling visions of humankind’s destiny, unfolding across a canvas of decorated skin, living cities take their vengeance, technology awakens the most primal natural instincts, and dreams are carried aloft in junkyard rockets.” It was a warm afternoon in early September when I first met the Illustrated Man.

Stephen king's mr mercedes6/29/2023 Just over 40 pages in, we've already learned that this paradigm of German engineering did its lethal work because it was driven by a psychopath: the seemingly innocuous and 30ish Brady Hartsfield, who'd stolen the car before embarking on his joy ride from hell. Shortly after King's novel begins in the predawn hours of a foggy April day, this 12-cylinder beast mows through a crowd of unemployed workers lining up in the dark for a job fair.īut unlike its predecessors, this King car isn't a supernatural creature with a mind of its own, any more than this novel is a classic whodunit. Cain and Raymond Chandler - the killing machine is a Mercedes-Benz SL500. Mercedes " - an homage to hard-boiled crime fiction that expressly invokes James M. In the terrific "From a Buick 8" (2002), something resembling a Roadmaster tempts highway patrol officers - and readers - to take a one-way journey into King's sprawling "Dark Tower" series. In "Christine" (1983), a Plymouth Fury becomes a jealous and murderous lover. Stephen King has always had a thing with cars.

Bobiverse books6/28/2023 I am very picky about how military characters, strategy etc. It’s not military SF and the Bobs are reluctant (though capable) operators in that sphere. The stars look down by aj cronin6/28/2023 The early tragedy of the disaster at the mine in which the hero’s father is killed, is described very graphically, almost unbearably. But though it could be a story of clichés, because the main characters are complex and feel very deeply, the reader follows the inevitable outcome to the end.Īt first I found the unremitting poverty of the families of the miners on strike very hard to read about but gradually the strong plot and interesting characters began to interest me.Ĭronin’s gift for description made the world, both the hardness of the miners’ lives and the opulence of the wealthy, come alive. It shows the difficulty of escaping such a life and the dishonesty and deceit of those who put money first. It lays bare the poverty and danger of the lives of miners in the North-East where the mines run under the sea. It’s the Poor what gets the blame but it is much more than this. This book if expressed simplistically might be expressed in the words of the old Music Hall song – It’s the same the whole world over…

The New 52 by Brian Azzarello6/28/2023 With its abrupt revelatory ending, Volume 1 is by no means a complete story, but as the beginning of a significantly ambitious saga exploring the dark side of comic book heroes, it does the trick of ensnaring attention and freeing the reader of the usual surety that good will prevail. Despite twelve different artists contributing to the various chapters, the visuals are consistent, clean, and suitably heroic. He is the author of JONNY DOUBLE, BATMAN: BROKEN CITY and the Harvey and Eisner Award-winning 100 BULLETS, all created in collaboration with artist Eduardo Risso. The theme is dire, but the inherent high stakes are levied with some light humor and a strong, page-flipping fast action pace. Brian Azzarello has been writing comics professionally since the mid-1990s. This wild, freewheeling joyride on a heroic world under attack by growing technology requires extensive knowledge of the current DC Universe and characters%E2%80%94large roles are played by B-list characters Firestorm, O.M.A.C., and Grifter. Bruce Wayne sends Terry McGinnis, his prot%C3%A9g%C3%A9 and successor (from the TV series Batman Beyond) back in time to prevent the disaster, but Terry lands in the DC Universe five years from now, when the sinister events are already underway. Green Arrow is dead, Superman hides behind a faceless helmet, and heroes and villains alike are being transformed into killer cyborg insectoids. Years from now, the heroic DC Universe is on the verge of becoming a nightmare dystopia. |
